At Cascade Fence & Deck, we’ve seen a lot of projects, but some stories stick with us more than others. When we first met Mike and Marge, their home had just endured a disaster—one that no homeowner ever wants to experience. A massive storm had swept through, bringing heavy rains, high winds, and, ultimately, destruction.
“January 13th, 2024. I’ll never forget that day,” Marge told us. “The winds were howling, and we could hear branches falling. Then suddenly—BOOM. The house shook. The power went out. And we just looked at each other like… what do we do now?”
A Nightmare Come to Life
What had happened was more than just a fallen tree. It was three trees—plus a fourth that fell later—crashing down onto their house and deck, shattering their roof, breaking windows, and leaving their home exposed to the elements.
“The ceiling collapsed. Water was pouring in. We were scrambling, trying to save what we could,” Mike recalled. “We grabbed the biggest tarp we could find, emptied out every tub we owned, and started catching the water. Every single day, we were bailing water out of our own house.”
It took two weeks before crews could even remove the trees. By that point, insulation was soaked, the structure was compromised, and their beloved deck—once their go-to space for relaxing, entertaining, and watching TV—was in ruins.
“We knew we had to rebuild, but we also knew we didn’t just want to put things back the way they were,” Marge said. “This was our chance to make it even better.”
A Fresh Start with Cascade Fence & Deck
That’s when they found us.
“We actually first heard about Cascade Deck & Fence at a home show,” Mike explained. “At the time, we were just gathering information, but after the storm, we reached out. And I’m so glad we did.”
Right away, we wanted to make sure this was a smooth, stress-free process for them. After everything they’d been through, they needed a team that would not only build a great deck but also listen to their needs and concerns.
“We had a couple of other companies come out for estimates, and to be honest, they just weren’t thorough,” Marge admitted. “One guy barely looked at anything before giving us a hand-drawn sketch. Another company said they could remove part of the house structure without even checking under the house!”
That’s why we love to take our time.
“Tavis from Cascade came out twice,” Mike said. “He actually crawled under the house, checked how everything was built, and explained exactly what would work and what wouldn’t. The other guys just assumed. Tavis made sure.”
Designing a Better, Stronger Deck
Once we had the green light, we worked with them to design the perfect outdoor space—one that wouldn’t just replace what they lost but elevate it.
“The old deck had problems,” Mike pointed out. “It wasn’t big enough. The stairs were in an awkward spot. The cover was fabric, and you couldn’t clean it. So we decided—why not do it right this time?”
Together, we came up with a larger deck with a real, solid roof, new stairs that flowed better into the yard, and upgraded materials that would last for years to come.
“We went back and forth on some ideas, but Cascade was great about helping us visualize everything,” Marge said. “Tavis even held up tape measures so we could see exactly where things would sit. That was a game-changer.”
A Seamless Build & A Dream Come True
Once construction started, our crew—led by Matt and Miguel—worked carefully to bring their vision to life.
“They were so precise with everything,” Mike said. “And they cleaned up so well! Every day, they left things neat and organized. Plus, they liked my music, so that was a bonus!”
As the final details came together—the gorgeous cedar soffit ceiling, the integrated lighting, the custom mechanical blinds—it was clear: this wasn’t just another deck. This was the outdoor space they’d always dreamed of.
“I walk out there every day and say, ‘I love my deck.’ Every single day,” Mike said, laughing. “It’s even better than I imagined.”
“I just can’t wait to get my furniture out there, put some plants up, and enjoy a glass of iced tea while watching TV in the afternoon,” Marge added. “It’s perfect.”
The Cascade Difference
For us, this project was about more than just building a deck—it was about helping homeowners reclaim their space after a devastating loss.
“From start to finish, Cascade was just… on it,” Marge said. “They handled the permits. They coordinated with electricians. They even found us a great painter. Every step of the way, they made it easy.”
“I’m just glad we went with them,” Mike added. “Because now, I get to sit on the deck, look up at that beautiful cedar ceiling, and think… yeah, we did this right.”
