Frequently Asked Questions

Our recommended choice for diverting rainwater under a deck is the Zip-Up UnderDeck System. It's specifically designed to create a water-tight barrier between the deck and the space below, ensuring that water doesn't seep through. This system is not only easy to install but also highly effective, allowing you to create a dry, usable space underneath the deck while protecting it from moisture.

While it's possible to use deck boards for fascia, fascia boards specifically designed for this purpose (from the same material as your decking) are usually better. They are thinner and more flexible, allowing them to conform to the edge of the deck more easily and provide a clean, finished look.

Composite decking is generally considered the best option because it's durable, low-maintenance, and long-lasting. Unlike wood, composite decking resists rot, insects, and moisture, which means less upkeep over time.

Cedar is a great choice due to its natural resistance to rot, decay, and insects. Other options include pressure-treated lumber, which is more affordable, and hardwoods like Ipe or Teak, which are more expensive but extremely durable.

Leif recently gave an overview of the typical costs of building a deck by examining several completed projects with varying sizes, features, and levels of complexity.

    • Features: Glass railings, stairs to ground, suitable for dining and lounging.

    • Cost: $80,000 and up
    • Features: Engineering and permitting required, large footings, multi-levels, waterproofing, multiple features such as hot tubs, outdoor kitchens, and large staircases.
