Designing a deck in Portland means more than just adding outdoor square footage—it’s about creating a space that works year-round, from sunny summer evenings to rainy winter days. We recently finished a project in Portland, OR, that perfectly balances style, function, and durability. Below we highlight this deck visually on Instagram.
A Closer Look at the Deck Design
This deck came together as a blend of modern design and practical features tailored to Portland’s climate. Here are some of the standout choices that made this project unique:
Durable Composite Decking
We built the main 450 sq. ft. surface using Costa composite decking from Deckorators. Not only does it bring a warm, natural look, but it also holds up against the Pacific Northwest’s rain without the maintenance that wood requires.Sleek Aluminum Railing
Around the perimeter, 125 linear feet of black aluminum picket railing adds a clean, open feel while providing safety without blocking the view.Waterfall Stairs with Lighting
To make the stairs a focal point, we installed waterfall-style steps using 45° mitered trim pieces for a seamless look. Each stair features Inlite Evo strip lights along the lip, which adds both safety and atmosphere at night.Privacy Screen with Accent Lighting
On one side of the deck, we built a 6 ft. tall by 12 ft. wide privacy screen out of the same Costa composite decking for a cohesive look. Sierra accent boards were incorporated along with Fusion 22 puck lights to bring depth and style.Covered Patio for Year-Round Use
To make the deck usable in Portland’s rainy winters, we added a 16×12 shed-style patio cover. The exposed wood framing and black metal roof give it a modern rustic feel while providing protection from the elements.
Built to Code, Backed for Life
Like all of our projects, this deck was built to current building codes and finished in just six days. And because we stand behind our work, it’s protected with our lifetime workmanship warranty so the homeowners can enjoy it worry-free for years to come.
