This project in Portland was all about improving curb appeal by integrating a custom-built cedar fence into a larger landscaping project. The homeowner had a specific vision, and our team at Cascade Fence & Deck worked alongside their contractor Blueprint Earth to bring it to life. We recently asked our Project Manager Blake about how the project went.
Built to Match the Landscape
The fence wasn’t designed for security or privacy. It was built to frame the property and complement new hardscaping. Blueprint Earth handled the retaining wall and grading, and Cascade was brought in to build a fence that fit the design.
“It’s not a functional fence. It’s strictly just for looks.”
We built a custom 2×2 clear cedar picket fence, with exact spacing and dimensions provided by the homeowner. The finished height was three feet six inches, a non-standard size chosen for its proportions. The project also included a clean reveal above the top rail, all planned in advance.
“We had renderings of the fence style, picket spacing, even the exact height they wanted.”
Seamless Coordination with Contractors
Our role in this project was one part of a larger team effort. Blueprint Earth coordinated the schedule and picked up the material package from us to prestain all components in a natural cedar tone. Once the site work was complete, we stepped in to install the fence.
“Nick went out for the estimate, got a feel for the layout, and we waited until the wall was done before scheduling.”
We commonly work with other contractors to bring our knowledge to the table. We work with landscape designers, hardscape contractors, and builders to deliver fences that fit the overall plan—not just functionally, but visually.
Quick Build with High Attention to Detail
Installation took just three to four days. Because the posts were mounted on stanchions above the retaining wall, the crew needed to predrill and set brackets to precise heights for a level and consistent appearance.
“They had to set the brackets at a perfect height… but other than that, it was straightforward.”
Custom Gate Design

The gate was built to swing both ways and fully matched the rest of the fence. We used a 180-degree ball-bearing hinge for smooth dual-direction operation—normally used in commercial applications.
“Usually there’s steel showing, but this gate was completely wrapped. That was the custom part.”
It was also designed with an additional latch to allow it to stay open when needed. The end result was a seamless, polished gate that didn’t look like an afterthought.
Clear Communication, Clean Outcome
Even with the homeowners out of town during construction, our crew kept in close contact to ensure everything went to plan.
“They came home to a beautiful fence. It looks like it’s always been there.”
By the time the landscaping was finished, the fence helped frame the space and pull the entire project together—adding a refined finish to the front of the home.
Partnering with Contractors to Complete the Vision
This project highlights something we do regularly at Cascade: work directly with contractors to deliver custom fencing that fits into a larger outdoor living plan. Whether it’s a full backyard transformation or a small feature like a retaining wall, we can step in at the right time with the right solution—built to spec, on schedule, and ready to install.
